Alright! Problem Solved!....it wasn't the carb (it is a twin carb head)...it was the plug wire, fortunately I had a new one on hand.

I did go thru the jets and bowl....only some mild grainy deposits, but that was a quick check so no harm.

I also forgot to mention that along with the erratic firing I had been hearing a subtle electrical 'crackle-pop' sound sometimes...probably a key indicator of some electrical related problems!

The wire that I replaced was the remaining wire of a set (the other had been replaced a while back), and it was a 'strange' wire...the type with the 'assemble yourself' plug end connection, perhaps these work just as well, anyways, the wire was somewhat corroded at the coil end, probably just old.

Lesson Learned: when cutting plug wires to length, always allow yourself enough length to be able to just swap sides with the plug wires to troubleshoot....or wait, is that a good idea? or is that not consistent with the timing settings? Is it better to actually remove a wire and install on the other coil to check, or can you just run one cylinder off of the other cylinder's coil and wire provided it reaches over?

Thanks people, this is a great forum.
