Snakepit - after a couple of weeks on the bike (I suppose it had done about 1500 miles) I noticed that it had become harder and harder to find neutral or move from first to second. I concluded that the cable had stretched a little. I loosened the large nut nearest the lever and then turned the smaller nut so that the cable shortened. This solved the problem.
