If you are talking about cleaning disassembled pieces try PBW.
Powdered Brewery Wash by Five Star. You can get it at any Home brewery supplier or on line.

I just soaked a BSA A65L head and except for some of the baked on carbon in the combustion chambers it cleaned up like new. All the old oil stains in the aluminum casting disappeared.
I am really impressed by this stuff. It is also ecologically safe. You just dump it down the drain. You mix it at two to four ounces per gallon of water.
1 lb. cost me ten bucks.
