It's largely because Triumph didn't use remote sensing on their voltage regulator.

It's a fixed-voltage regulator that maintains a constant voltage on the rotor -- regardless of system demands -- so it can't read the output to the battery and adjust accordingly.

If they'd spent another dollar it wouldn't be a problem.
