I would mostly stick to the mfgr guidelines, but wouldn't be afraid to give it a little (briefly) now and then. Avoid steady throttle. Exercise the allowed rev range up and down, using lots of engine braking. I could break=in someones bike in a normal weekend of riding. It's not that painful a process if you just get out and go for a couple all-day rides in the twisties. Those torquey motors pull just fine at low RPMs.
