IMO you can open the airbox and toss the K&N in ( I did)
but while your at it you may want to turn your mixture/pilot jets out to 2 1/4 turns. The base setting from the factory is 1 1/5. Elsewise you'll get popping from the exhaust on decelleration. More noticeable of you have drilled/off-road pipes.
