I have not checked mpg yet but will on my next weekend trip. I was told to do the same thing to help determine whether I need 89 or 93 octane.

Right now it is a light layer of black. I'll run it back to the shop and let them have a look. Thanks for the tip.
djr, the dealer told me they set the mixture a bit rich. I'm not sure if it is because of the previous problem with this bike being run too lean, or if that is a common practice for this engine.
