It sounds like your gear shift linkage was loose? Sounds like you have it back together OK, just make sure you have 2 or 3 mm of play in the clutch lever on the handlebar (it should move jut a little bit before going "tight"). Make sure the gear shift linkeage is tight so it doesn't come loose again.

Sounds like everything is basically OK - I'm not very familiar with the americas, so I can't offer more than fairly generic information I'm afraid.
