I lane split generally. That's why I commute on a bike...
I avoid doing it near toll-booths or in tunnels as drivers are more likely to make quick, last minute lane changes. I find it interesting that it is a law that varies from state to state. In NY i was able to get out of a ticket by saying, "It's legal in CA..." Luckily i still had my CA DL at the time.
Generally, I'd say its as safe as the rider makes it. Using good judgement, there nothing more dangerous than riding normally.
