I had the same problem a few months ago. Everyone said, jets, carbs, fuel line was plugged up, it's the petcock, the gas filler tube paint chipping off...
It turned out it was a FARMERS AIRCLEANER. A mouse house in the airbox. The symptoms are that it gets worse. My T-bird wouldn't rev over 5,000 then a few days later 4,000. By the time I decided to take it in to have it looked at, I had trouble getting over 2,200 rpm's. (The engine would stall out at that point and it was tough to start). The nest gets sucked to the filter and clogs it more and more. There wasn't a mouse living in it any more. By the way the nest was huge, filling up almost the whole air box, (the guys at the shop saved it for me to see). 1,400 miles later, (last week), I had them put in a K&N filter and check the airbox, no more critter homes. My T-bird runs like a champ. Ron.
