Lane splitting is legal in NZ, it may not be in some other countries of even in different US states.
This basically is the NZ law: (Note: we drive/ride on the left)
It is OK to overtake on the RIGHT of a MOVING or STATIONARY vehicle within the same lane (unless it's indicating to turn right).
It is OK to overtake on the LEFT of a STATIONARY vehicle within the same lane (unless it's indicating to turn left).
It is an OFFENCE to overtake on the LEFT of a MOVING vehicle in the same lane (unless it's indicating to turn right).
It's not allowed to run up either the left or right hand shoulders of highways or motorways.
Motorcycles are allowed on city bus-lanes but not on motorway-bus lanes. City councils allow this but the State Highways Dept does not.
Generally if it is done sensibly when traffic is bumper to bumper to lane-split. It is safer to lane-split in my opinion than ride between bumpers of slow moving/stopping traffic.
If the traffic is proceeding less than 20km (approx 12mph) then lane-splitting can be considered OK, anything faster don't do it.
Any views on lane-splitting in other countries ?
