If I remember correctly, from what I read on another site, a likely cause is a low voltage (or weak) battery condition.
The latest version of TuneBoy has a feature to disable the low voltage speedo self-test, to prevent the speedo from failing to readout.
If battery voltage is low - such as would usually occur while in long term storage - but not low enough to be completely discharged, when you first turn on the ignition and power up the ECU, the speedo low voltage test can fail. This causes the speedometer to not readout.
I suggest keeping a Battery Tender (TM) connected to your battery continuously while storing the bike, or when weather conditions keep you from riding it for days at a time.
