Kurgan, you shouldn't have to explain your moniker. After all, Highlander won the Oscar for Best Movie Ever Made!
Graubart, du hast recht.
White Sands is fascinating and very beautiful. My favorite part of Las Cruces is the farming museum; very interesting. I remember the (then much younger) girls asking one of the museum workers what "those" were, pointing at a bull whose testicles were hanging about a sold foot below it's abdomen. Mrs. HiD and I waited with baited breath, but the good 'ol boy simply said "that's part of the bull", and they accepted that as a reasonable answer.
You were there during the fire? I was in the National Guard at the time, up in town. I remember seeing burned out hulks of cars, with solidified liquid metal streams running down from where the aluminum wheels had been. I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it. Lots of folks lost their homes in that fire, but it was truly touching watching the whole state come together in support of those people. People donated so much material, I remember going into a fire station that was literally packed with water, underwear, socks, and chapstick.
Boy was I glad to get some chapstick.
