With that out of the way, now the rear light/license plate assembly has to be removed:
I got a bungee cord and hooked it around the rear assembly and hung it off the side of the bike:
Now I could work on removing the muffler. It was very easy, as there is a clamp in the back of the muffler (standard exhaust clamp), and then a bolt going across the top:
