My philosophy has always been - Don't ask, just do it. If it's not legal some jobsworth is bound to come along and stop you.
That's clarification enough.
I do agree that drivers should be aware that we are doing nothing illegal but I don't think that is the reason they become offensive/defensive (these, it has to be said are a minority). The top and bottom is that they don't want
anyone making swifter progress than themselves.
