Having just gone through the whole Alternator bolt ordeal, I can tell you that, on my bike at least, the alternator bolt rattle *starts* around 2500-3k RPM and will continue up to 4-5k RPM. It is also significantly louder than the standard triple "gurgle" that typically ends at distinctly 3k.
So, my advice is that if the bike is new to you and you are not familiar with its sounds and vibrations, if your rattle ends right at 3k, you are probably ok. If it continues over 3500-4000 or higher, you should look at the alternator and drive system.
I had owned my Adventurer for just a month or two before my Alternator bolt failed (on the clutch side), and I could tell immediately that something had changed. The noise and vibration was well over the threshold of "normal", for me at least. It almost felt like a bad connecting rod, the mirrors were useless, and if I let go of one side of the handlebars, it would vibrate so much, well, I just knew something wasn't right.
