bwelsh,
Nope, plug gap shouldn't be a prob. Should be gapped right from the box(Well, NGK's are usually right), but still good idea to double check. Should use NGK DPR8-EA9 for cold temps and DPR9-EA9 for hot temps(I use DPR9-EA9 here in Texas year round). The only things that really affects the idle is the fuel/air mix, carb sync, throttle cable(enough end play), idle adjuster, choke(make sure cable fully dissengages and choke pistons on side of carbs are fully pushed in), and vacuum leak(air fuel mix). This, of course is assuming all else is fine with the ignition(plugs, plug wires, coils, igniter, crank sensor). Ignition problems usualy result in missfires and eratic engine performance, not high idle. I believe your problem is now carb related. Check to ensure that when the choke is turned off, that the carb slides push all the carb choke plungers all the way in. The choke slides are on the thin side and can bend easy if not carefull when working on the carbs. Double check the vacuum tap plugs, carb to manifold clamps, throttle cable, choke, carb sync, idle jets(2.5 turns out from lightly seated).

Yea, I know this stuff is a big PIA 'cause you pretty much have to pull the tank off to see averything(I've done that more than once myself). If you still have probs, let me know and I'll send you some photo's of all the area's to check.
