I have an 07, and my carbs only required the D tool. You can buy a tool from newbonneville.com. I think the mixture screws only had plugs over them on 04 models and earlier - but I am not 100% certain of that.
Are you up for a ride this sunday afternoon? Lindsayt and I are going to hook up at 2.30pm - I haven't figured a meeting place yet.
Also - I think the only way you're going to get those needles out is to pull the diaphragm and piston.
It just so happens, for reasons I shall not disclose, that I have a spare set of carbs. If you like you can look those over prior to working on your own set.
