Having taken apart several petcocks, I can tell you there usually are a couple of very small "O" Rings that do all of the sealing. The unrepairable ones I have seen, had severely worn aluminum parts that were pretty much unsalvageable. The petcock on my T-3C is not vacuum operated, so there is no diaphram to go bad.
