That's a Rockster, which is my old bike:
There is a lot of talk about the rear ends failing (especially the final drive) on BMWs, but I never had any issues. I just changed the final drive fluid every 6k miles and it was fine.
Obviously something had to hit the bike, or he hit something, to cause that damage.
