Rear Pad Thickness

Took me rear wheel off today, ready to get a new tyre on it. Whilst it was off I decided to check out the brake pads. I know the book say's the minimum thickness is 1.5mm. On one side the pad is 2.4mm and on the other its 3.8mm.

What though is the starting thickness of the pads?

The bike's got close on 5K miles on it, so I would be nice to know the wear rate. Considering new pads whilst I've got it all stripped down.
