The little light is for when the key is in the "park" position (all the way to the left?). Basically it's for when you're parked on the side of the highway and you want people to see you but you don't want to drain the battery too rapidly.

Believe I had to cut wires and put on connectors because the little light in the replacement reflector used a different socket than the old one. Or you could just leave it disconnected -- pretty sure I've never used that little light anyway.
