Well from what I have read the biggest indicator seems to be a loss of power and throttle response above 4k RPM. Also you can look for plug fouling. However plug fouling can be a symptom of many things. I suspected that my #1 coil was bad so I switiched it with #3. Now I am 90% positive it is bad but I also suspect that my carbs need to be adjusted. I am going by what I have read so if anyone wants to chime in with experience feel free. I am strictley a parts changer and am not good with diagnosis and fine tuning.
