Try to practice some launches on a side road before you go. Try coming out at different RPMs and feather the clutch like mikeinva said. If you come out at too low an RPM you will bog, If you come out @ 7K and pop the clutch you will be looking at the sky. The first 60' of your run is the most important. Get the launch down and the rest is just a ride to the market.
When you go to the staging lights things will get busy fast, your heart will be pounding, but you need to stay calm and focused. Forget about the bike next to you in the other lane. Run your own race.
Your first run you can run it to the limiter to get the feel but you will be loosing precious time while the engine sputters then recovers, remember you are running against the clock and every .001 of a second counts.
Slowly stage your bike until the first yellow light lights up then get adjusted with your throttle hand and clutch hand and your stance ready. Only then move to light the second yellow. If they are running a regular light then you will have time to watch the yellow lights run down the tree. Leave when you see the last yellow light and by the time you react it will be green.
If they are running a pro light (I hate them), you will have no time after your staging lights are lit. All the yellows will light at the same time and you have to leave.
The first run you will nervous, only natural. After that you will be running to get in line to do it again.
Above all be safe and enjoy every minute.
It is a rush you won't forget.
