My guess is that it's because most people brag HP. The sportbike magazines also seem to market the HP numbers and redline (especially on the front page) more than torque.
I had a class with a kid who was telling me that his 600RRRRRRR made 120 HP. I asked him what kind of torque it made and the RPM needed to produce the 120 HP. I was answered by a dumb look and some babbling about what the salesman told him.
