Canucks_fan has a really good point with the skull candy headphones. I bought a pair on a whim after reading this thread to see how good they work and I was shocked to find that they do indeed block more road noise than a pair of legit ear plugs like we use in our machine shop. If you aren't the kind of person who enjoys spending 4x as much on headphones then I highly recommend these. And for those of you who honestly believe that $100 earbuds are worth it, more power to you, but with road noise I reallllly doubt that the difference is very noticeable.
