As the story goes was one of the knights on the Crusades that killed a Crocodile which then became a dragon etc etc.
Factual or not? Who knows but the bible is believed and the likes of King Arthur etc so why not eh?!?!?!
I guess its just a good reason to be proud to be English (as its not a popular thing to be the rest of the year) the same as St Davids day for Wales, St Andrew for Scotland and St Guiness for Ireland
