I heard from a dealer that the State of CA is in the works to begin smog / emissions inspections on motorcycles starting 2009 or 2010. It sounds like it will be a periodic thing, once the program gets started. May never happen, but if you take it off, better save it just in case. I'm leaving mine on - I'm happy being a tree-hugger.
